Learners at Noordeland High School in Polokwane, Limpopo have staged a protest following a series of bullying incidents, including alleged harassment by teachers over afro hairstyles and a violent stabbing case involving two students.

The students accuse school officials of failing to protect them, citing a recent cyberbullying incident where an Instagram account was created to target learners. “When we reported it, the school dismissed us,” one student said. Another added that security ignored a fight that led to a stabbing, claiming it “wasn’t their problem” because it happened off school grounds.

A learners’ rights organization condemned the school’s inaction, stating that student safety should extend beyond school gates. Meanwhile, education authorities confirmed disciplinary measures against bullies and announced a R4 million anti-bullying program, including awareness campaigns.

Protesters have given the department five days to respond to their demands for stronger protections.
