The Police in Phalaborwa are investigating the death of six people who were trapped underground at the Phalaborwa Copper Mine in the early hours of yesterday, 15 July 2018.

The joint search operation led by the Search and Rescue Teams was activated soon after this tragic incident was reported to the Police until the first body was retrieved during ring the day.

The search operation for the remaining people unfolded until in the early hours of this morning on 16 July 2018, at about 02:35 when five bodies were retrieved bringing the total number of fatalities to six.

The deceased are all men and the process of identifying them is still unfolding.

The cause of this incident is still not clear at this stage but the Police investigations in conjunction with other role players including the affected mine will tell as they are still continuing.
