The Special Joint Dedicated Task Team composed of various Police Units have re arrested one of the escapees, the 19 year old Piet Mashaba while in hiding last night, 31 January 2018, during a search operation. Mashaba was initially arrested for rape and robbery incidents.
The manhunt for the remaining six awaiting trial prisoners is still unfolding.
These seven prisoners who escaped from Lebowakgomo police holding cells, some of whom were arrested for murder, rape and armed robbery, escaped in the early hours of 31 January 2018 after cutting the roof of one of the cell blocks.
The following escapees are still being sought:
Thabiso Maleka (30) arrested for robbery.
Lucas Chuene (30) arrested for murder.
Motswiri Mohahlele (25) arrested for robbery.
Tshepo Maja (39) arrested for rape and robbery.
Mpho Ledwaba (33) also arrested for rape and robbery.
Frans Maponya (19) also arrested for rape and robbery.
The last four mentioned prisoners, including the rearrested one, were arrested following an incident that took place in June 2017 where a man and his girlfriend were accosted walking in the street at Mamaolo village outside Lebowakgomo and robbed them cell phones and clothes at gun point.
The suspects took turns in raping the woman.
