
In a case highlighting the diligent work of local law enforcement, 29-year-old Doctor Papo Chuene was sentenced to 15 years imprisonment on Friday, 29 August 2025, for the attempted rape of a 34-year-old woman in Sengatane village.Sengatane village.
The incident occurred on the evening of 26 May 2024. The victim was walking to a local spaza shop to purchase snacks when she was called by Chuene. Ignoring him, she continued on her path before the accused suddenly grabbed her.
Chuene forcibly took the victim to a corner against a wall and attempted to rape her. Her screams for help alerted members of a passing minibus, who stopped and came to her rescue. During the commotion, Chuene managed to flee the scene.
The matter was immediately reported to the local Seshego police, who commenced a manhunt for the suspect. The following day, on 27 May 2024, Chuene was apprehended at his hideout within the same village.
The investigation was transferred to the Seshego Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offenses (FCS) Unit, where Constable Rotshidzwa Mafadza was assigned to lead the case. Despite Chuene being granted bail after numerous appearances at the Seshego Regional Court, Constable Mafadza remained committed to the pursuit of justice.
Through her dedicated efforts, a successful prosecution was secured. Doctor Papo Chuene was convicted and ultimately received a 15-year prison sentence for the attempted rape of the victim, who has been identified as mentally challenged.
