A family is grappling with the sudden and violent loss of their patriarch, retired teacher David, who was shot dead during a home invasion. The attack, which has left the community in fear, is part of a disturbing surge in violent crime targeting local households.
A Family Shattered
In the early hours of the morning, two armed men forced their way into David’s home while he and his wife were asleep. The 65-year-old was shot multiple times in the abdomen and legs after refusing to hand over his car keys.
“They asked my father for his car keys. When he refused, they started shooting him all over his body,” said a grieving family member. “We are devastated because his passing was so sudden. He was the pillar of our family—we all relied on his counsel.”
The family’s tragedy is compounded by the growing sense of helplessness in the community. “Crime here has gotten so bad that we have nowhere to run to,” they added. “Now they are killing us in our own homes.”
A Second Family Targeted
The same night, another family was attacked in their home. A woman, whose identity is being withheld to protect her daughter—a rape survivor—recalled the harrowing ordeal.
“I heard the bang of a firearm, then footsteps approaching our room,” she said. “They kicked the door in and demanded money, claiming someone had told them I had cash. When I said I didn’t, they ordered me to undress.”
In a desperate attempt to deter the assailants, the woman revealed she had recently suffered a miscarriage and was HIV-positive. The attackers then turned to her daughter.
“They left me and went to rape my daughter,” she said, her voice breaking.
Now, her daughters are too traumatized to stay at home. “They slept at their aunt’s place last night, even though their father was here,” the woman said. “I pray counseling helps them.”
Community Leaders Demand Police Action
Local authorities say the attackers appear to be targeting small business owners. A community leader, who narrowly escaped gunfire while responding to the attacks, expressed frustration with law enforcement.
“This is the third incident since February,” he said. “The South African Police Service must intervene because even I am scared now. If I get a call, I can’t go out—I’m still traumatized.”
He accused the police of failing the community, citing a recent murder and robbery at a local shop before this latest attack.
Ongoing Violence
The crime wave shows no signs of stopping. Just two weeks ago, a Grade 12 learner was shot and killed during a series of home invasions in Malamulele.
As the suspects remain at large, residents are left questioning their safety. With fear mounting and trust in authorities eroding, the community is calling for urgent action before more lives are lost.
