Rape of niece (3), man handed life sentence

A 28-year-old rapist has been sentenced to life imprisonment by the Mankweng Regional Court, on 10 December 2020 for raping his three-year-old niece during 2018 at a village in the Mankweng Policing area outside the City of Polokwane.

During January 2018, the victim was left under the care of the accused when he raped her while the mother was not home. When the mother returned back home, she noticed her child was in pain and immediately took her to the hospital for medical examination. It was then confirmed that she had been raped and that’s when victim informed her mother that she was raped by her uncle.

A case of rape was then opened and assigned to Detective Sergeant Mape Jonas Sepaela attached to the Polokwane Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit. The suspect was arrested immediately.

The accused was granted bail and made several court appearances before he was convicted and handed a hefty sentence yesterday, 10 December 2020.

The identity of the accused has been withheld to protect the victim.

The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Limpopo Lieutenant General Nneke Ledwaba has welcomed the sentence and commended the Polokwane FCS Unit especially the investigating officer, for the commitment in fighting gender based violence and ensuring that perpetrators are removed from the society permanently.
