The Mankweng Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 14 May 2025, sentenced 35-year-old Matome Johannes Seabi to life imprisonment for the rape of a 12-year-old girl.

The court heard that on 01 December 2009, the victim was walking home from school in Ments, Badimong Village, when her elder sister gave her money to deliver to Seabi, who had assisted their family with electrical repairs. Upon arrival, Seabi instructed the girl to enter his home, claiming she could not hand him the money while standing outside.

The victim complied and was told to sit on a sofa. Seabi then asked if she wanted to stay longer, but she insisted on leaving. He refused, forcibly took her to his bedroom, and raped her. After the assault, the traumatized minor returned home and reported the incident to her family.

A rape case was immediately opened at the local police station and later transferred to the Polokwane Family Violence, Child Protection, and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit. Sergeant Daphney Mpebe led the investigation and arrested Seabi on 18 December 2009 at his residence in Ments, Badimong Village.

Seabi was granted R1,500.00 bail on 09 March 2012. However, through Sergeant Mpebe’s relentless efforts, justice was ultimately served, resulting in a life sentence for Seabi, who was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.

Limpopo Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, welcomed the court’s decision, stating that it reinforces the commitment to removing dangerous criminals like Seabi from society.
