LIMPOPO — A successful Polokwane illicit cigarette bust has landed a 25-year-old foreign national behind bars and removed R35,000 worth of illegal tobacco from the local black market. The high-value seizure marks the latest victory for regional law enforcement agencies targeting the lucrative contraband trade.
The incident unfolded on Sunday, 05 July 2026, when the Limpopo Provincial Flying Squad launched a targeted, intelligence-driven operation. Acting on specific tips regarding a white Audi A4 suspected of ferrying contraband, authorities tracked the vehicle to the Ladanna policing precinct. Upon pulling over the sedan, officers discovered a substantial haul of illegal Remington Gold cigarettes that were allegedly being distributed across the Polokwane and Tzaneen areas.
Following the Sunday interception, the driver—identified as Zimbabwean citizen Eldrie Ngwenya—was brought before the Polokwane Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 06 July 2026. Ngwenya faces formal charges related to the possession and transportation of contraband tobacco. The presiding magistrate denied bail, remanding him in custody with a scheduled return to court on 09 July 2026 for further legal proceedings.
The successful operation drew high praise from provincial law enforcement leadership. Major General Jan Scheepers, Acting Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo, publicly commended the Flying Squad members for their sharp vigilance and rapid response, noting that their swift action effectively interrupted a major illegal distribution pipeline.
Meanwhile, police investigations are actively continuing as detectives work to uncover the broader syndicate responsible for supplying the illicit Remington Gold products to the region.
