Police warn community about criminality perpetrated against the disabled

The South African Police Service in Limpopo urge members of the community about the prevalence of crimes perpetrated against people living with disabilities or impairment. This follows an incident that occurred on 8 June 2018, when a case of rape was opened at the Mookgophong Police Station near Modimolle by the local Social Worker for the rape of an 18 year old mentally impaired woman.

It is alleged that members of the community noticed that an 18 year old who is the mother of a four year-old child was actually raped during 2014 and fell pregnant as a result. The matter was immediately reported to the social worker who opened the case on behalf of the victim. The initial investigations by the Police ensued and subsequently, the suspect who is also mentally disabled, was arrested.

The 47 year old suspect appeared before the Mokgopoong Magistrate’s Court and he was released on free bail pending further Police investigations.

The suspect will appear again in the same court on 22 January 2018.

Members of the community are advised to ensure the safety of the disabled people at all times to prevent this type of incidents from occurring.

The investigations are still continuing.
