The South African Police Service in Limpopo are once more warning members of the community about the alarming increase of drowning incidents taking place across the Province due to the recent heavy rains.

This stern warning emanates from the recent two separate incidents of drowning which occurred over the past weekend in the Levubu Policing area outside Thohoyandou and in the Bolobedu Policing area outside Tzaneen, where two minor children lost their lives.

On 5 January 2019, at about 13:00, a 12 year old boy, allegedly drowned while swimming with his brother and friends in a river at Mohlabaneng village in the Bolobedu Policing area. The Police were summoned to the scene, they reacted swiftly and started with the search operation led by the Saps Search and Rescue Team until the body of the boy was retrieved.

Meanwhile on 6 January 2019, at about 06:10, at Hamutsha Village in the Levubu Policing area, a 14 year old girl, was found floating in the local river. The Police were summoned to the scene and they reacted immediately led by the Search and Rescue Team, the body was then retrieved from the water.

The post mortem will still be conducted to determine the cause of death on both deceased. The Police investigations in both incidents are still continuing.

Members of the community especially parents and guardians must ensure child safety at all times to prevent this type of incidents from occurring.

They must constantly talk to their children and make them aware of the possible dangers while around dams and rivers, including swimming without the close supervision of the professional divers.
