The Provincial Anti-Smuggling Team dealt a significant blow to a smuggling syndicate on Thursday, 15 May 2025, after intercepting a suspected stolen white Toyota Cross SUV destined for Zimbabwe via an illegal crossing at the Limpopo River.

Intelligence-Led Operation

Acting on credible intelligence, police were alerted that the vehicle was being driven toward Malale Drift, heading for the riverbanks. Authorities swiftly mobilized and located the SUV in the bushes near the Limpopo River around 06:00 as it attempted an illegal crossing into Zimbabwe.

Suspects Flee into Zimbabwe

When officers tried to stop the vehicle, the driver sped off but became stuck in the sand. Two male suspects abandoned the SUV and fled on foot into Zimbabwe, evading arrest.

Vehicle Recovered, Investigation Underway

Preliminary investigations confirmed that the Toyota Cross belongs to a South African private company but had not yet been reported stolen. The vehicle was impounded at the scene for further forensic analysis.

Provincial Commissioner Commends Police Work

Limpopo Provincial Commissioner Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe praised the swift response of the officers, emphasizing the importance of such operations in combating cross-border vehicle smuggling.

Police investigations are ongoing.
