A 42-year-old female suspect, a sergeant stationed at Tshamutumbu police station, will appear before Mutale Magistrate’s Court today, Monday, 18 December 2023 on charges of extortion. The suspect was arrested on Thursday, 14 December 2023.

The victim alleged that on Sunday, 10 December 2023 while busy at the shop, a female suspect entered the grocery shop and requested to see the shop owner, who was not available at that time. He was then called, and he refused to talk to the suspect.

It is alleged that, the suspect then decided to take groceries worth R954.00 and load into her parked motor vehicle, she added that if the owner does not pay the money that is owed, she will keep getting groceries until all of her money is paid.

The owner of the shop alleged that during 2021, the suspect sold illicit cigarettes valued at R190 000 to him, and he paid through installments, the remaining balance was +/- R15 000, and he promised to pay the outstanding amount when he got money.

The owner then reported the incident to the police, and the extortion case was investigated, the case was transferred to IPID for further investigation.

The suspect is set to appear before Mutale Magistrate’s Court today, Monday 18 December 2023.

Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Limpopo Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has condemned the incident and said” Limpopo police will actively work to root out any corrupt elements within its ranks and urged community members to report such acts without fail,” remarked General Hadebe

Police investigations are still continuing.
