Police in Thohoyandou have arrested a 44-year-old male suspect, who is Police Sergeant stationed at POPS Thohoyandou for attempted murder of his landlord. The incident took place on Monday, 20 November 2023 at about 22:10 in Makwarela Township, Vhembe District.

According to police reports, the victim found the suspect outside the rented residence playing loud music and instructed him to stop since it was disturbing pupils with their examination preparations.

Afterwards, the suspect didn’t take it well, and an argument ensued. The suspect fired shots at the victim and then fled the scene. The victim was taken to the nearest hospital with severe gunshot wounds on the upper body.

Police were notified about the incident and opened an attempted murder case, and IPID was notified.

The suspect was arrested on Tuesday 21 November 2023 in Vuwani village.

The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, has condemned the incident in the strongest terms.

“Police officers are tasked with safeguarding the people, not harming them. This behaviour is intolerable; this member has to face the long arm of the law, and this is a warning to those who might still consider doing the same” commented General Hadebe.

The suspect will appear before the Thohoyandou Magistrate’s Court soon on charges of attempted murder.

Police investigations are still continuing.
