Police officer arrested for armed robberies, operation nets another 579 suspects, Limpopo

The Police in Limpopo have arrested 580 suspects aged between 19 and 50 during ongoing weekly joint operations that were conducted across the province, focusing on hotspots areas from 26 June until Tuesday 5 July 2022.

The suspects were arrested for various offences including robberies, rape, murder, attempted murder, assault, burglaries, stock theft, arson, MITP, fraud, dealing in drugs and unlawful possession of firearms.

Three suspects aged between 36 and 42 including a female Police Sergeant attached to Seshego Police Station, suspected to have been behind armed robberies committed in and around Seshego were arrested on Wednesday 29 June 2022 by the Westenburg Detectives and Capricorn Highway Patrol team. One suspect aged 39 was arrested in Ladanna under Westenburg policing area while driving the Datsun Sedan motor vehicle allegedly used to commit the robberies.

The Police Sergeant (42) and other suspect aged 36 were arrested in Luthuli Park outside Seshego. During the arrest, police recovered two firearms, one belonging to the Police Sergeant and the other with a serial number filled off and items such as groceries, cigarettes and cash amount of money.

The suspects are facing charges of unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition and possession of suspected stolen properties. The Police Officer, is facing additional charges of defeating the ends of Justice, Harbouring a Criminal and Negligent handling of a firearm.

The Team pounced on another suspect aged 24 at Luthuli Park after he was positively linked to business robbery committed at a liquor outlet around Seshego last month. The suspect was found in possession of the stolen groceries and cash amount of money. The Renault Kwid motor vehicle that was reportedly used to commit the crime was also confiscated.

In the Masemola policing area, a 37-year-old suspect was arrested at Magate Village on 1 July 2022 at about 03:00 for unlawful possession of a firearm and ammunition. The firearm was positively linked to the attempted murder case and the suspect allegedly asked his friend to hide the firearm for him.

On Saturday 2 July 2022, Waterberg District Highway Patrol team reacted swiftly and arrested a 29-year-old man soon after a community member was robbed of R4000, 00 at gunpoint in Sekgakgapeng Village. The 9mm pistol was also confiscated.

Firearms, drugs and other items were recovered during these operations, as follows:

7 Firearms, 2 stolen vehicles, 8990 × sticks of counterfeit cigarettes, 12 × dangerous weapons, 3633.996 x grams of dagga, 7 × knives and 367310 ml liquor.

The Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe is impressed with the successes reached during the latest operations and has urged the members to intensify visible policing while at the same time, hunting down wanted suspects.

The operations are continuing.
