In an intelligence-driven operation on Friday, 8 August 2025, the Mopani District Vala Umgodi Task Team apprehended four suspects for alleged illegal sand mining at the Kubjanane River in Enable Village.

The operation, conducted at approximately 07:00, saw officers approach the scene tactically before arresting the suspects, who had attempted to flee. Authorities confiscated two trucks, along with shovels and picks used in the illegal activity.

The suspects are set to face charges related to the unlawful mining of sand. The South African Police Service (SAPS) has reaffirmed its dedication to tackling illegal mining operations and safeguarding the country’s natural resources.

“SAPS will pursue all viable leads to ensure accountability,” the statement read, underscoring the ongoing efforts to clamp down on illicit mining activities.

Further investigations may be underway as law enforcement continues to address environmental and economic crimes in the region.
