The heads of two white lion and eight paws were recovered from suspected lion poachers, Limpopo police said on Wednesday.

Police spokesperson Ronel Otto said police acted on a tip-off after it emerged that there were suspects roaming the streets of Giyani trying to sell the lions parts.

A joint operation by members of the provincial Stock Theft Unit attached to the Rhino Task Team, and members of SANparks, saw three suspects arrested in Giyani on Tuesday afternoon.

“Three suspects were arrested and the heads of two lions as well as eight paws were recovered,” said Otto.

The arrests came after three lions were poisoned and killed for their heads and paws last month in a Stockpoort farm near Bela-Bela and Groblersdal.

“Investigations to link these arrests and discovery to the incident where two white lions were poisoned at Stockpoort are ongoing,” Otto said.

The suspects, all from Mozambique, are expected to appear in the Giyani Magistrate’s Court tomorrow.
