LIMPOPO — The Musina Magistrate’s Court has sentenced Cosmas Rutsito, a 28-year-old Zimbabwean national, to an effective five years of direct imprisonment for the possession of a stolen motor vehicle. The ruling concludes a criminal case that originated from a targeted police operation in the Musina area.

The conviction stems from an incident on Friday, 5 December 2025, when the South African Police Service (SAPS) acted on information from a reliable source regarding a suspected stolen Ford Ranger Wildtrak parked at a residence in Mushongoville, Musina. Law enforcement officers responded immediately to the tip-off, located the vehicle at the specified address, and arrested the suspect at the scene.

Subsequent verification checks confirmed that the Ford Ranger had been reported stolen in the Elsburg policing area of Gauteng Province on Sunday, 30 November 2025.

The investigation docket was initially allocated to Constable Machebele before being transferred to Constable Ngozo Florence Mavis of the Musina Vehicle Crime Investigation Unit, who oversaw the case through to prosecution. Throughout the legal proceedings, the accused remained in custody after the court successfully opposed his application for bail.

The matter culminated in sentencing on Monday, 24 August 2026, where the presiding officer handed down the following penalties:
– Count 1: Possession of a stolen motor vehicle, carrying a sentence of seven years’ imprisonment, with three years suspended for a period of five years. This suspension is conditional upon the accused not being convicted of a similar offence during the five-year period.
– Count 2: Contravention of Section 49(1) of the Immigration Act 13 of 2002, carrying a sentence of twelve months’ imprisonment.

The court ordered that the sentences run concurrently, resulting in Cosmas Rutsito serving an effective, direct five-year term of imprisonment.
