The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Nneke Ledwaba, lauded the excellent detective work by the Provincial Investigative Unit after a 27-year-old woman, accused of orchestrating the murder of her own mother, was, along with her two co-accused, sentenced to a combined 53 years imprisonment by the Polokwane High Court Monday, 7 December 2020.
The accused, Violet Mabina, hired two men Brian Ndlovu aged 24 and Wilmington Shumbayaonda aged 27 to kill her mother, Nancy Mabina aged 53 over a family conflict in exchange for R100 000.
The two accused then arrived at the house at Zone 1, Seshego outside Polokwane City on 15 April 2020 at about 02:00 in the morning where the deceased’s daughter opened and let them into the house, making it to appear as a burglary. She then pointed them to where her mother was sleeping before she went to her own bedroom.
The duo then attacked the deceased, stabbed her several times with a knife, robbed her of a cell phone and fled the scene. The deceased’s elderly mother then called for help and the police was notified. The woman was certified dead on the scene.
Police opened a case of murder and investigations commenced which involved a manhunt for the suspects. On the same day, police managed to arrest the two accused. The deceased’s cellphone was also recovered and subsequently, the deceased’s daughter was arrested.
The case was investigated by Detective Warrant Officer Koena Malebane attached to the Provincial Investigative Unit.
The trio remained in custody until their ultimate sentencing.
The sentences passed are as follows:
Violet Mabina was sentenced to 23 years imprisonment and her two co-accused, Brian Ndlovu and Wilmington Shumbayaonda were each sentenced to 15 years imprisonment.
The Provincial Commissioner further commended the community members for continuously providing the police with positive and valuable information that assist in speeding up the investigations.
