Modimolle policeman behind escape of 13 suspects

A piece of a puzzle fell into place last week about a police officer who allegedly helped prisoners awaiting trial, to escape from the cells in Modimolle on Tuesday, March 15, 2016.

A total of 13 men fled after they allegedly forced open the enhanced wire mesh of the exercise room. The police have in the meantime arrested nine of them again.

According to police, the arrested suspects involved Warrant Officer Elias Mothloki (56), who was on service that day, with the escapees. He was arrested on Friday, May 5, 2016 and after a thorough internal investigation appeared in court on 13 charges of helping with escaping and two counts of corruption.

He was released on bail of R1 500 and must appear in court on Friday, June 3, 2016. He is currently on leave.
Warrant Officer James Findlay, spokesperson for the Modimolle police, believes Mothloki respectively received R5 500 and R1 500 from two different groups of prisoners. He allegedly gave them saw blades and a bolt cutter and “looked the other way” while they escaped.

As far as information gathered by Die Pos, Mothloki worked for more than 15 years at the Modimolle police station. He was previously believed to be stationed at the Convention training site near Thabazimbi.

The four suspects still at large, are Given Mogashone, Dennis Jove, Forgive Ngube and Collin Muleya. They were arrested for charges of armed robbery. The other fugitives, according to Warrant Officer Findlay were apprehended with the help of informants.
