A large-scale search operation is currently underway in Thohoyandou in the Vhembe District after a 34-year-old awaiting-trial prisoner, Muluvhu Gumani, allegedly escaped from lawful custody on Monday morning.
According to police reports, the incident occurred on 25 August 2025 at approximately 08:50. Gumani was being transported alongside twelve other awaiting-trial prisoners to the Thohoyandou Magistrate’s Court. Preliminary investigations indicate that while the police vehicle was stopped at a robot-controlled intersection, Gumani allegedly forced open the vehicle door and fled the scene on foot.
Gumani was initially arrested and charged with robbery with a weapon other than a firearm. Authorities have described his escape as a serious breach of security and have mobilized significant resources to locate and re-apprehend him.
In a statement, police have issued a stern warning to the public. “We are appealing to members of the community not to attempt to apprehend the suspect themselves, as he may be dangerous. Your safety is paramount,” the statement read.
Instead, anyone with any information regarding the whereabouts of Muluvhu Gumani is urgently requested to contact the investigating officer, Detective Captain Sydney Dama, directly on 082 469 1035. Information can also be reported anonymously to the national Crime Stop hotline at 08600 10111 or via the MySAPSApp.
The police have assured the public that all leads will be treated with the utmost confidentiality.
