A intensive manhunt is underway for a 35-year-old man suspected of arson and attempted murder following a horrific incident at a family residence in Mariveni village on Friday night. The Ritavi South African Police Service (SAPS) under the Mopani District is leading the search.

The event unfolded on the evening of Friday, 29 August 2025, at approximately 21:57. According to police reports, a 57-year-old woman was inside her home when she heard the sound of arguing and a person crying. Upon investigating the noise, she discovered her 35-year-old son pouring an inflammable substance inside the house. Her granddaughter was present, crying and attempting to stop him.

The situation escalated rapidly when the suspect then doused both the elderly woman and the young girl with the flammable liquid. The two victims managed to escape the house to seek help from neighbours.

When they returned, the entire house was already engulfed in flames and could not be saved. The suspect had allegedly fled the scene in his motor vehicle shortly after setting the fire.

The property, valued at over R300,000, was completely gutted by the blaze, which also destroyed all the furniture inside.

An arson case has been opened at the local police station. Investigators have identified the suspect as 35-year-old Vusi Mnisi and believe he is directly responsible for the incident. They are urging anyone with information on his whereabouts to come forward.

The public can contact the Investigating Officer, Sergeant Vulani Ngobeni, directly on 082 319 9699. Information can also be reported anonymously via the Crime Stop number at 08600 10111, at any nearest police station, or through the MySAPS App.

Police investigations are continuing.
