The Mankweng Regional Court outside the City of Polokwane, sentenced a 35-year-old man, Mapalane Arthur Magoro to life imprisonment for raping a 10-year-old girl in Ga-Makanye village in the Mankweng policing area last year (2019). The accused was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.

On 21 March 2019, the accused who is from the same neighborhood, took the victim to an unfinished house and on arrival, he instructed her to undress and raped her. Afterwards, he gave her money to go and buy simba chips and threatened her not to tell anyone.

Later on, when the victim’s mother realised that she is missing, she started to search for her but could not find her until she returned home late in the evening.

The child reported the incident to her mother. A case of rape was opened at Mankweng police station and assigned to Detective Sergeant Chuene Selolo from the Polokwane Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit.

The accused was arrested immediately and kept in custody throughout the trial until he was ultimately sentenced.

The Acting Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Limpopo Major General Christine Moralakadi has applauded the detective who was responsible for investigating this case and the Polokwane FCS Unit for their continuous sterling work.

“We are pleased that one more criminal is permanently removed from the society and we hope that the affected family and community at large can finally find closure knowing that the accused can never harm anyone else again”, concluded General Moralakadi.
