One of the three bullets that struck Berdus Henrico (39) during a farm attack in Limpopo on Tuesday 6 February 2018, only just missed the aorta and went through his jaw and out at the back of the neck.

The other two bullets struck him in his shoulder. Only one bullet was removed on Thursday afternoon 8 February 2018, and Henrico will have to wait until Monday so that tests can be done to determine when the remaining bullet can be removed.

Chrisna Henrico Van der Merwe, Henrico’s sister, told Maroela Media on Friday that her brother has since been discharged from hospital and has strong pain medication and antibiotics.

“Things eventually started to improve after a private doctor in Bela Bela undertook to treat him, because he had been in a state hospital since the attack and underwent scans, but was not operated on to remove the bullets. His wounds were also not cleaned properly, “said Van der Merwe.

“The private doctor arranged for Berdus to be discharged from hospital and also arranged transportation from the hospital to his practice. The bullet was stuck in his shoulder and the doctor could take it out at his practice. His wounds were also cleaned for the first time. The doctor has let my brother recover at home, that he no longer has to deal with the frustrations in the state hospital. We prefer this because now he and his fiance can be together and work through the trauma, when he was in hospital, they could not see each other all the time. ”

Henrico and his fiancee, Estelle Nieuwenhuys, are currently residing with family in Bela-Bela. He has to go to an orthopedic hospital on Monday, after which further medical treatment will be determined.

Maroela Media reported earlier that he and his fiance were attacked by three armed suspects on a farm outside Vaalwater on Tuesday night at about 21:00. They were alone in the house on a farm in the Melkrivier area where Henrico manages the farm for someone.

It is not clear how long the attackers were in the house. Henrico and Nieuwenhuys became involved in a wrestling accident with the suspects, during which Henrico was shot three times and assaulted. The attackers also shot Nieuwenhuys but luckily only scratched her.

The attackers fled with electric items and a gun.

Lieutenant Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe the Provincial police spokesperson said on Friday to Maroela Media that no one has been arrested in connection with the incident.

The Dorset police are investigating a case of robbery and attempted murder. The investigation continues.

Van der Merwe has since established a trust fund to help her brother with his medical expenses as he has no medical aid.

People who want to make a contribution can send her an email at [email protected]
