An awaiting trial prisoner hanged himself in the Bela-Bela police cells on Thursday, July, 21.
Freddy Nkale (22), who is a suspect in several theft cases in the Bela-Bela area, hung himself with the strings of his jacket, shortly after the suspects that he had shared a went to court. COL. Lindie Marx at the Bela-Bela station said Nkale was found dead in the cell.
He was due to appear on Friday, July 22, on various charges in the Bela Bela Magistrate’s Court.
According to Marx, Nkale was alone in the cell when he committed suicide, and no foul play was suspected.
A post-mortem is being conducted and the Independent Police Investigating Directorate (IPID), the local criminal record center has been informed of the incident, Marx said. Nkale’s family has also been informed of his death.
