Two suspects aged 31 and 41, were on 25 September 2019, at about 09:30, arrested by the South African Police Service in Vuwani outside Thohoyandou, shortly after they committed a business robbery around Malamulele policing area. In the process, Police recovered various incriminating exhibits including unlicensed firearms and ammunition as well as a hijacked motor vehicle.

The Police received a tip-off from members of the community about unknown suspects in possession of firearms, driving around Dzwerani village. Police reacted swiftly and on arrival, the suspects sped off but Police gave chase and with the support from the SAPS Airwing, the Police managed to apprehend the suspects.

During the arrest, Police recovered two firearms, seven rounds of ammunition, a magazine and other items taken during the robbery perpetrated in Malamulele such as airtime vouchers and cash. The Toyota Hilux motor vehicle used during the commission of the crime was also confiscated.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the recovered vehicle was hijacked in Waterval. Investigations are ongoing to determine the origin of the recovered firearms and possible linkage of these suspects to other offences.

The suspects are expected to appear in the Vuwani Magistrate’s Court soon on charges of possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition as well as possession of suspected stolen property.

Police investigations are still continuing.
