The South African Police Service in Limpopo has welcomed the long jail sentences meted against two accused in separate incidents at Seshego outside Polokwane and Northam outside Bela-Bela.

In Seshego, Louis Tlou William Dipela aged 37 was sentenced by the Seshego Regional Court to an effective life imprisonment for rape and three years imprisonment without fine for assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm.

The sentence follows an incident which occured on 16 December 2016, at about 19:00. The victim was with her boyfriend at the nearby tavern, her boyfriend started to be furious after she asked a lift to take them home. He suddenly assaulted her and forced her to his house and raped her.

She then reported the matter to the police who immediately started with their investigations until the accused was apprehended.

In Northam, Piescent Tlhasedi aged 21 was sentenced by the Thabazimbi Regional Court to an effective 13 years imprisonment without fine for murder.

The sentence comes after the accused was found guilty for murdering Tsietsi Jan Moselane aged 55. On 20 August 2016, at about 10:40, these two males had a heated argument, where the accused stabbed the deceased to death with a sharp object at the Northam RDP block 4 section.

The police were summoned and started with their initial investigations until the accused was apprehended.

The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Limpopo Lieutenant General Nneke Ledwaba commended the investigating teams which were involved in these cases who ensured that these perpetrators are removed from our society indefinitely.

“These sentences will send a very strong message to all the criminals out there that the Police are hard at work to ensure that women and children are safe and they do feel safe, concluded General Ledwaba.
