On 30 July 2019, the FF Plus lodged three complaints with the Human Rights Commission (HRC) concerning the pollution of water sources due to poor service delivery in Limpopo.

The communities of Thabazimbi and Northam fear for their health and permanent damage to the local ecosystem after raw sewage spilled into the Bier and Rooikuil streams that feed into the Crocodile River.

The two towns are also burdened with poor service delivery and the streets are littered with rubbish. The dumping sites are not managed according to the relevant legislation.

The third complaint was lodged against the Modimolle-Mookgophong Municipality due to the pollution of the Nile River just outside Naboomspruit (Mookgophong) with sewage.

The community approached the FF Plus after nothing was done about their many complaints to the Thabazimbi and Modimolle-Mookgophong Municipalities.

The conservation of our natural environment is of the utmost importance for both humans and animals and these municipalities must do their duty by providing proper service delivery to the community.

The pollution of water sources must not be tolerated seeing as water is already very scarce in this province. The entire Limpopo has a serious shortage of water and now the little water that is left is being polluted as a result of poor municipal management.

The HRC was requested to step in immediately to prevent valuable natural resources from being destroyed and because it poses a serious health risk to the people.
