The South African Police Service (SAPS) in Limpopo is facing serious allegations of officers participating in criminal activities, including aiding cigarette smugglers and accepting bribes.

In recent months, several officers have been arrested for allegedly escorting illicit cigarette smugglers using police vans and even ambulances. These incidents were reported along the porous border areas, including Botlokwa and the Zimbabwe-South Africa boundary.

High-Ranking Officer Arrested in Hijacking Syndicate

A reporter revealed that a high-ranking SAPS officer was recently arrested for alleged involvement in a car hijacking syndicate. The suspect, whose identity has not yet been disclosed, is set to appear in court for a third bail application on the 28th of this month.

This is not an isolated case. Two years ago, nine officers from the Tshamatumbu Police Station were arrested for facilitating the smuggling of contraband and illicit cigarettes into South Africa.

Traffic Officers Also Implicated

The corruption extends beyond the SAPS. This year alone, 20 traffic officers were arrested for soliciting bribes from motorists. These incidents have severely eroded public trust in law enforcement.

According to a Social Attitudes Survey by the Social Sciences Research Council, only 22% of South Africans trust the police. With a population of 64 million, this means roughly 13 million citizens have confidence in law enforcement—a troubling statistic that may worsen as more cases of police misconduct come to light.

Community Distrust Grows

Residents in border communities have expressed deep concern over officers’ alleged criminal involvement. Many fear that those entrusted with upholding the law are instead enabling illegal activities.

SABC News continues to investigate these allegations, with more updates expected as the cases develop.
