The Limpopo Provincial Police have initiated an intensive investigation and manhunt following the alleged rape and murder of a two-year-old boy from Maphosa Village in the Botlokwa policing area, Capricorn District.

According to police records, the child was taken to Ga-Makgato Clinic on 30 May 2026 presenting with severe abdominal pain and diarrhoea. Due to the critical nature of his condition, he was transferred to Botlokwa Hospital for advanced medical care. Upon arrival, the child succumbed to his injuries.

Medical examinations conducted by the attending physician allegedly revealed indications of sexual assault. Hospital personnel reported the matter to the South African Police Service (SAPS) on Monday, 1 June 2026. A murder case was immediately opened, and investigations are underway. The suspect remains unidentified at this stage.

Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe, Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo, condemned the incident and reaffirmed the police commitment to protecting children.

“This is a deeply disturbing and heartbreaking incident involving an innocent and vulnerable child,” said Lt. Gen. Hadebe. “We strongly condemn this senseless act and have mobilised our investigative resources to ensure that the perpetrator is swiftly identified, traced, and brought to justice. We appeal to community members who may have information that could assist the investigation to come forward.”

Further investigative steps are ongoing, including a post-mortem examination to determine the precise cause of death.
