LIMPOPO — A sweeping Limpopo police corruption probe has resulted in the impending prosecution of a Northam court orderly, who is accused of taking bribes to orchestrate the escape of a female inmate. The 44-year-old South African Police Service (SAPS) sergeant is scheduled to face justice later this month, marking a significant crackdown on internal misconduct within the provincial law enforcement ranks.
The allegations stem from a security breach discovered on 30 October 2023. As detainees were being transported back to the Northam police station following court proceedings, two relief commanders conducted a standard headcount and inspection. It was during this routine check that authorities realized a female foreign national, who was in custody pending deportation, was missing from the holding cells.
At the time of the disappearance, the accused sergeant was not present at the facility. When initially contacted, he claimed he was en route to the station but subsequently failed to report for his shift the next day.
The missing deportee was eventually tracked down and re-apprehended later that same year. It was during her recapture that investigators uncovered allegations of bribery, revealing that a substantial sum of money had allegedly been handed to the 44-year-old court orderly to secure her unlawful release.
The tip-off prompted a specialized inquiry by the Limpopo Provincial Anti-Corruption Unit. After finalizing their evidence gathering, the unit handed the case docket over to the Senior Public Prosecutor to determine the legal path forward. Acting on the prosecution’s directives, authorities served the SAPS sergeant with a formal summons on Friday, 03 July 2026. He is now officially charged with corruption as well as aiding and abetting an escape.
The accused is slated to make his inaugural appearance at the Northam Magistrate’s Court on 31 July 2026. Addressing the public, Limpopo’s Acting Provincial Commissioner of Police, Major-General Jan Scheepers, reiterated the department’s strict stance against internal graft.
Officials have noted that broader police investigations into the circumstances surrounding the breach in security and the financial transactions involved remain active and ongoing.
