LIMPOPO — In a major security operation, Limpopo police have arrested two suspects after the Waterberg Flying Squad seized approximately R975,000 worth of illegal explosives. The successful interception underscores ongoing law enforcement efforts to combat the illicit transport of dangerous materials and secure the province’s road networks.
The tactical stop-and-search operation unfolded in the early hours of Friday, 30 October 2026, at approximately 04:45. Officers from the Waterberg Flying Squad were conducting routine patrols when they intercepted a white Toyota Quantum at Kranskop Plaza along the N1 South.
During the search of the vehicle, officers discovered bags containing a large quantity of explosives. The two occupants, identified as adult male foreign nationals aged 30 and 43, were questioned about the cargo. When challenged to produce the necessary documentation or permits authorizing the transport of such hazardous materials, the men failed to provide any proof of legal authorization.
Consequently, both men were immediately arrested on charges of transporting and illegally possessing explosives. In addition to confiscating the dangerous materials valued at an estimated R975,000, law enforcement also seized the white Toyota Quantum used to transport the illicit cargo.
Lieutenant General Jan Scheepers, the Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo, publicly praised the tactical unit for their swift action. He commended the members of the Waterberg Flying Squad for their vigilance and dedication during their daily duties, noting that their proactive measures successfully prevented dangerous explosives from falling into unauthorized hands.
The two suspects are currently in police custody and are scheduled to make their first appearance before the Modimolle Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 2 November 2026, where they will formally face charges related to the illegal possession and transportation of explosives.
