The Phalaborwa Regional Court has sentenced Thabalesoka Shayi, aged 53, to life imprisonment for rape of a 24 year old woman in Namakgale outside Phalaborwa during an incident which took place six years ago.

The victim was walking alone from Top ville to Mashishimale village outside Phalaborwa at about 23:30 on 15 December 2012, when she came across two men who changed their direction and started to follow her. She became frightened and ran away.

They chased her until they caught up with her, threatened and dragged her into nearby bushes. The two took turns in raping her before they fled the scene.

She reported the matter to the police, who immediately traced the suspects. One suspect was arrested in 2014 and the second has not been arrested as yet, and the police are continuing their search for the suspect.

Meanwhile, in Mphephu outside Thohoyandou, a 32 year old man, Nzimeni Evans Muthukhwana was sentenced by the Thohoyandou High Court to a consolidated jail term of 21 years imprisonment for murder, two counts of assault common and he was further declared unfit to possess a firearm.

This heavy jail term emanated from the incident where the accused stabbed to death Njerengu Filbert, aged 35, on 20 August 2016, at about 21:00. The accused came to a restaurant to buy food, where the victim was working and when he asked him to pay, the accused suddenly snapped out and produced a knife, stabbed the deceased in the chest before he fled the scene.

The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Limpopo Lieutenant General Nneke Ledwaba has commended the Team of Detectives including the Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit who participated in all these cases for a job well done in securing the convictions.
