LIMPOPO — A decisive Limpopo child sexual offence sentencing concluded this week at the Groblersdal Regional Court, resulting in a 10-year direct imprisonment term for a 30-year-old man convicted of raping a four-year-old girl in Dennilton.

The accused, whose identity is being withheld by the court to protect the minor victim, was sentenced on Thursday, 29 October 2026. He was found guilty of contravening Section 3 of the Criminal Law (Sexual Offences and Related Matters) Amendment Act 32 of 2007, a critical piece of legislation designed to protect vulnerable children from abuse.

The harrowing incident dates back to August 2025. According to court proceedings, the four-year-old victim was playing with other children when the accused, a man known to her, beckoned her to a secluded area behind a house. Once she approached, he picked her up, placed her on his lap, and sexually assaulted her.

Following the assault, the young child experienced physical pain and began to cry. In a brave disclosure, she recounted the ordeal to her sister. The sister subsequently informed their aunt, who immediately reported the matter to the police, triggering a formal criminal investigation.

The case was assigned to Captain Lekgala Phala, an investigator attached to the Groblersdal Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit. Through meticulous and dedicated investigative work, Captain Phala successfully compiled a watertight case that brought the accused before the court and secured the conviction.

Lieutenant General Jan Scheepers, the Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Limpopo, publicly welcomed the 10-year sentence, highlighting the severity of the crime and the necessity of stringent consequences for offenders who target minors.

During a statement addressing the outcome, Lieutenant General Scheepers specifically commended Captain Phala and the broader FCS Unit for their unwavering commitment and diligence. The Provincial Commissioner noted that the thorough investigative work was instrumental in ensuring that justice was ultimately served for the victim and her family, reinforcing the SAPS’s ongoing mandate to eradicate gender-based violence and child abuse in the province.
