Home invasion and rape, accused handed 35 year sentence, Ritavi

The accused Joster Mulungana aged 28 was convicted for rape, house breaking and robbery with aggravating circumstances and sentenced to 35 years imprisonment in Ritavi Magistrate’s Court on Monday 22 May 2023.

The court heard that Joster broke into a shack of a 31-year-old woman at Sasekani village outside Tzaneen in the night of Sunday 1 July 2018.

The court heard that Joster was armed with a knife and panga and found the victim sleeping with her four children and he robbed her of undisclosed amount of money and dragged her out of the shack whereby he raped her.

The case of rape, house breaking and robbery with aggravating circumstances was successfully investigated by Detective Sergeant Rakgoale NJ of the Tzaneen Family Violence Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit.

Joster was arrested on Monday 02 July 2018 and he remained in custody until the final court appearance when he was found guilty and sentenced to twenty years for rape, ten years for robbery and five years imprisonment for house breaking which will run concurrently.

The court declared Joster unfit to possess a firearm and ordered that his particulars be endorsed in the Register for Sexual Offenders.
