The Hawks’ Serious Organised Crime Investigation assisted by Provincial Illegal Mining Task Team, Provincial Organised Crime, Department of Mineral Resources and Energy, Local Criminal Record Centre (LCRC) and Bakoni mine arrested four suspects aged between 28 and 66 at Klipfontein and Phashaskraal and seized mining equipment worth over R1.4 million on 29 March 2023.

During the operation, one excavator tractor, two generators, three jack-hammers and two spades were confiscated.

The suspects are expected to appear before the Mecklenburg Periodical Court on 31 March 2023 to face charges of illegal mining and contravention of the Immigration Act.

The Hawks will continue with disruptive operations to address illicit mining in the affected areas within the province.
