The accused person, a 24-year-old Wiseman Dala Maluleke has been convicted for rape and was sentenced to life imprisonment on Friday, 08 December 2023 by Giyani Magistrate’s Court.
The court heard that the accused threatened the victim with a knife on Sunday, 26 February 2022 at Giyani Section F in Mopani District.
It is reported that the accused offered the victim and her boyfriend some liquor and chips at a tavern and later demanded that the boyfriend of the victim pay him back the money he spent towards them.
It is reported that the boyfriend agreed to pay the accused his money and he went to his house to fetch money then when he came back he was surprised to found that the accused threatened his girlfriend with a knife and subsequently raped her.
The case of rape was opened and the docket was assigned to Detective Sergeant Conny Mabunda of SAPS Giyani Family Violence Child Protection and Sexual Offences Unit for further investigation and she managed to arrest the accused two days after the case was opened. The accused was denied bail and he remained in custody until the final court appearance.
The Provincial Commissioner of the Police in Limpopo, Lieutenant General Thembi Hadebe has applauded the members for meticulous investigation and welcomed the sentencing meted out against the accused.
“This sentence has been passed while we are campaigning for the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence Against Women and Children, it must serve as a deterrent to would be rapists,” said Lieutenant General Hadebe.
