Four arrested in planned ‘stokvel money’ robbery

Four suspects aged between 29 and 48 were arrested in this matter, including a couple who happen to be the owners of the house where the money was robbed while being shared among a group of 45 women at Ga-Seaphole Village.

During this arrest, the following items were recovered, a 9mm licenced firearm belonging to the 48-year-old who is the owner of the house, 3 x cell phones, 1 x magazine and 6 x live rounds of ammunition.

These suspects will appear before the Bolobedu Magistrate’s Court soon on various charges ranging from house robbery, perjury and Possession of firearm and ammunition without a licence.

It is alleged that on Sunday 10 December 2017, at about 13:00, a group of 45 women gathered at Ga-Seaphole Village in the Mokwakwaila Policing area of Bolobedu outside Tzaneen to share their stokvel money.

During this sharing process inside the locked house, two armed suspects pounced on them, they demanded money and started shooting randomly, injuring one of them and subsequently, a large amount of money was robbed before they fled the scene.

The injured woman was immediately taken to hospital where she is still recuperating with serious gunshots wounds.

The SAPS Acting Provincial Commissioner Major General Christine Morakaladi has commended the Tzaneen Cluster Commander Major General Maggie Mathebula and her Task Team who through their dedication and sterling efforts solved this case swiftly.

The General has further warned some members of the community who are still trying their luck in fabricating crimes for their personal gains that, they must refrain from these acts as the police are going to deal with them harshly.

The investigation into the fitness of the suspect whose firearm was allegedly used in this matter is also underway, in terms of the Firearms Control Act.

The Police investigations are still continuing.
