Farmer arrested for shooting farm worker by mistake

Johan Potgieter (47), a missionary renting a home on the farm Novengilla Group, outside Letsitele, Limpopo was arrested on March 9, for shooting an employee.

On Wednesday, March 8 Potgieter, was walking around the farm shooting monkeys, and that time, Mathanene Ishmael (55) a worker on the farm was shot in the head with a pellet gun.

Brig. Motlafela Mojapelo, a police spokesman, said Potgieter’s defense was that he thought the worker was a monkey.

The investigation continues.

The Far North Bulletin disputes the stories published in mainstream media that Ishmael was shot because he was mistaken for an ape. It appears that Ishmael walked around the corner of a building whilst Johan was shooting monkeys, and this is how he was hurt.
