EFF member shot in Polokwane

An Economic Freedom Fighter (EFF) female member who was distributing campaign materials at a taxi rank in the city centre was shot and wounded, police said on Wednesday.

Unconfirmed reports said the EFF member was shot on Tuesday after she was involved in an argument with a person wearing an ANC T-shirt.

“We attended a report last night after a member of EFF was shot and injured while distributing flyers, she was rushed to hospital for treatment,” said Polokwane police spokesman, Captain Ntobeng Phala.

Phala said no arrest has been made, however, a manhunt had been launched.

“We are investigating an attempted murder case, the suspect is known, but we cannot release his name now,” said Phala.

Commenting on the shooting, EFF MPL and provincial spokesman Jossy Buthane said the party was disappointed that the once peaceful Limpopo province was now on the list of provinces where there was “political intolerance”.

“We are calling on the ANC in the province to withdraw from this behaviour, it is not going to assist in peaceful, and fair elections,” said Buthane.

“If this is going to be the behaviour it means ANC is opening up to political intolerance … that person was wearing an ANC T-Shirt … he is either an ANC member or a supporter.”

Buthane said they are not going to be intimidated by the “monkey tricks” on their campaign to secure votes in the province.
He said the wounded EFF member was discharged from hospital Wednesday morning.
