On Wednesday, July 19, after three hours of waiting for the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), supporters and bystanders were rewarded for their patience when Julius Malema, leader of the controversial EFF party, made an appearance in Phagameng.

An estimated crowd of about 1,500 people, gave Malema a big shout out of “Amandla!” and Awethu! Malema also visited Lephalale and Bela-Bela in preparation for the municipal elections, to be held on Wednesday, August 3.

A large part of the crowd, who acted orderly, consisted of schoolchildren.

Malema, who has a practical knowledge of Modimolle’s problems, spoke about corruption in the municipality and named the people involved. All the topics he touched upon, he attracted great support from the crowd. The need for flushing toilets and pre-school education remained a priority. He also said that property is equivalent to dignity. He repeated his slogan of expropriation of land without compensation.

Malema, much thinner than before, was wearing casual clothing, a collared shirt, and his trademark red beret and arrived in a Mercedes van. After the serious issues had been discussed, he drew the audience’s reaction to various witty one-liners.
