A 26-year-old mother and her boyfriend aged 28, will on Tuesday 18 February 2020, appear in the Mokopane Magistrate’s Court in connection with the murder of their four-year-old daughter. The incident allegedly happened in the early hours of Sunday morning, 16 February 2020, at Extension 20 in Mokopane.
The fatal assault allegedly started when the woman’s boyfriend, who is not the biological father to the child, allegedly became agitated when the child started playing on him. He then took a cellphone cable charger and started assaulting the child in the presence of her mother, who apparently did nothing to stop the assault and thereby making herself complicit in the attack.
The couple then let the severely injured child sleep and only discovered later in the morning when they woke up that she had succumbed to her injuries.
The man later handed himself to the police and preliminary investigations led to the arrest of the mother.
The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Limpopo Lieutenant General Nneke Jim Ledwaba condemns the incident especially where parents harm their own children instead of protecting them. “Parents are called upon to play a daily vital role of providing security to their children at all instances and not subject them brutal assaults,” said General Ledwaba.
The duo will face a charge of murder. Police investigations are continuing.
