Following the cash in transit robbery which occurred last week in the Motetema Policing area outside Groblersdal, the Provincial Tracking Team embarked on an intelligence led operation, working tirelessly around the clock tracing the suspects involved in this incident until they were cornered and nabbed.
During this operation, three suspects who are aged around 20’s and 30’s were arrested in Mpumalanga and Gauteng Provinces and were positively linked to this incident, bringing the number of arrested suspects to four.
The following items were recovered during the arrests: A firearm, a motor vehicle Ford Ranger which is believed to be one of the cars used during the robbery and also the damaged cash of money believed to be some of the stolen cash during the robbery.
The preliminary police investigations have revealed that the recovered Ford Ranger was hijacked in Mooinooi in the North West Province during January 2018.
A Dedicated Task Team comprised of various police units has been placed in motion following the cash in transit incident which occurred in the Motetema policing area outside Groblersdal on 12 February 2018.
It is alleged that two G4 Security Guards were travelling along Ramogwera road and when they approached a speed hump, two vehicles, a white Ford Ranger and a silver X-Trail attacked them.
Occupants of these cars started shooting at the security vehicle, injuring the driver on the leg causing the vehicle to swerve off the road, lost control and it came to a halt on the edge of the road.This gang of about 11 suspects armed with rifles then pounced on the vehicle and tried to open it. When the vehicle couldn’t open, they instructed the victims to lie down and disarmed them of their service pistols.
The alleged scavengers then bombed the vehicle with explosives and managed to take an undisclosed amount of money before they fled the scene. Police were notified and reacted swiftly to the scene which led to the arrest of one suspect who is around 20’s and undisclosed amount of cash was recovered in his possession.
The arrested suspects will appear before Motetema Magistrates’ Court soon on various charges including armed robbery. The police investigations are still continuing.
