Calls for stricter rural security plan after murder on Spitskop farm
Farmer shot through window of his residence

The South African National Civic Organisation (Sanco) on Saturday called for the rural safety plan to be boosted following the killing of 54-year-old farmer Bertie Villiers, who was shot dead at Spitskop near Thabazimbi in Limpopo.

“We wish to condemn in the strongest terms possible the callous murder and hope that the manhunt launched by police will bring those responsible behind bars,” Sanco national spokesman Jabu Mahlangu said in conveying condolences to Villiers’s family.

Mahlangu appealed to communities to assist police in their investigations to bring the perpetrators to book.

“Vigilance in farming communities and among role players involved in rural safety will eliminate the threat of opportunistic crime, particularly during the festive season,” he said.

According to Limpopo police spokesman Moatshe Ngoepe, Villiers was found in his home with multiple gunshot wounds to the body on Friday. His vehicle was later discovered abandoned several kilometres away from the scene of the crime.

“It is alleged that the body of the deceased was found lying in the kitchen. For now, it is not clear what was stolen, but police investigations are continuing,” Ngoepe said.
