The Dedicated Task Team followed up on information on the movement of these escapees until they spotted them at two separate locations. Upon seeing that he was being cornered by the Police, one escapee Simon Mokone (23) allegedly started shooting at the police who retaliated and during that process, he was fatally wounded.

The second escapee Zandile Emmanuel Lebambo (31) was shot on the leg while trying to evade the arrest after he was allegedly found performing some rituals.

Lebambo was treated at a local hospital, discharged and he will appear before the Praktiseer Magistrate’s Court soon on a charge of escaping from lawful custody.

It is alleged that on 19 February 2018 at about 06:30 in the morning, the Police in Tubatse outside Burgersfort heard a hard knock on the cell doors and responded swiftly and on arrival, they found that three prisoners have escaped through the roof of the exercise room.

These escaped prisoners were identified as follows: Sandile Emmanuel Lebambo (31) who was arrested for rape, house breaking and theft and assault GBH.
Simon Mokone (23) who was arrested for robbery with aggravating circumstances, Possession of firearm without licence and possession of suspected stolen properties.
Tumelo Vincent Kgoedi (28) who was arrested for murder and attempted murder.

The circumstances behind this escaping incident is subject to Police investigations as they are still unfolding.

Manhunt for the remaining escapee Tumelo Vincent Kgoedi is still continuing.
