Baby who waged a fierce battle for her life is now recovering

Lehane Cordier, the 12-month-old baby from Bela-Bela, who has waged a fierce battle against blood poisoning over the past two weeks, is on the road to recovery.

The community had shown a lot of compassion toward Andre and Petroné Cordier during this difficult time. The community posted comments on a Facebook page offering prayers and good wishes for the brave little-redheaded warrior who almost died.

Lehane was admitted to the hospital on Friday, September 9, and during a routine examination, a doctor realized that she was not getting enough oxygen. Bronchitis and a fungus in her bloodstream led to blood poisoning causing too much carbon dioxide in her blood. Over the next few days, the girl’s heart stopped beating and she stopped breathing several times.

The baby was placed on a machine similar to a heart-lung machine for life support.

On Tuesday, September 27, Lehane could only receive oxygen through a tube that was inserted into her nose, and is gradually being weaned off. Early in the week, the baby had been on a ventilator but after one of her lungs collapsed, she was once again placed on the heart-lung machine.

The father, André posted an update on Monday, September 26th and said that little Lehane was doing remarkably well. “She is in her mommy’s arms, drinking milk, crying and doing everything that a baby should do. It is so good to her cry because it means she is alive.”
