LIMPOPO — A suspected ATM bombing plot in Zebediela, Limpopo, has been disrupted after an intelligence-driven operation resulted in the arrest of four men and the recovery of an AK-47 rifle, ammunition and a vehicle.
The operation unfolded in the early hours of Saturday, 24 October 2026, after information was received that suspects allegedly carrying unlicensed firearms and explosives were preparing robberies aimed at ATMs in the Zebediela area.
Acting on that intelligence, a multi-disciplinary deployment combining South African Police Service (SAPS) units with private security partners moved to prevent the planned bombings.
According to the account of the operation, the suspects allegedly noticed the operational team and tried to escape, triggering a pursuit. Their vehicle, a silver Toyota Starlet, was intercepted along the R568 in the Vaalbank area.
Rifle, Live Ammunition and Cellphones Recovered
A search of the Starlet uncovered an AK-47 rifle, two rifle magazines and 36 rounds of live rifle ammunition. Four cellphones were also recovered, and the vehicle was seized for further investigation.
The four men taken into custody are aged 28, 30, 46 and 50. They are expected to appear in court soon.
Multi-Agency Deployment Behind the Interception
The operation drew on several specialist structures within the police service, including the SAPS National Intervention Unit (NIU), Ivory Park Crime Intelligence, the Ivory Park Task Team, the Gauteng Provincial Investigation Unit (PIU) and the Mpumalanga Local Criminal Record Centre (LCRC).
Private-sector participants named in the operation were Fidelity ITOC, Vusela Risk Services, FNB PCM, ABSA Investigations and Safeguard Risk Services.
Their joint role was to translate the intercepted intelligence into a coordinated operational response aimed at stopping the suspected ATM attacks before they could be carried out.
Investigation Widens to Other Violent Crimes
Enquiries remain open into whether the four accused were involved in additional serious and violent offences. Investigators are looking at alleged links to ATM bombings, cash-in-transit (CIT) robberies and business robberies.
The seized vehicle and the items recovered from it are expected to feature in that continuing investigation, while the court proceedings against the four suspects are pending.
