A 30-year-old man sentenced to five years imprisonment for violation of protection order

The Phalaborwa Magistrate’s Court sentenced a 30-year-old man, Given Risenga, to five years imprisonment without option of fine, for violation of protection order on Monday, 13 November 2023.

The court heard that, on 04 November 2023, the accused was arrested after he violated a protection order against his ex-girlfriend aged 33.

Amongst other complaints against him, the victim complained that the accused who was her boyfriend, threatened to distribute their sex videos to social media platforms, if she attempt to end their relationship. She added that he recorded the videos without her knowledge and consent.

The accused was served with protection order, amongst other orders, he was not allowed to visit the residence of the victim. On 04 November 2023, he went to the victim’s and home and Phalaborwa Police arrested him same day for violation of protection order. The case was investigated by Sergeant, Maropeng Malatji of Phalaborwa Detective Unit.

During court proceedings, he pleaded guilty and the matter was quickly finalized by Phalaborwa Magistrate’s Court. He received a sentence of five years imprisonment with no option of fine.

The Provincial Commissioner of the South African Police Service in Limpopo Lieutenant General, Thembi Hadebe has welcomed the sentencing handed down to the accused and further encouraged women to stand bold and report any kind of abuse to the Police, with confidence that investigators will accurately do their job.
