The family of 72-year-old Matlankane Mathobela is demanding justice after he was allegedly abducted, assaulted, and forcibly circumcised at an initiation school in Ga-Mamatsha village outside Polokwane.
Mathobela was rescued by officials from the Department of Traditional Affairs a day after his abduction but not before suffering severe physical harm, including a broken arm and deep trauma.
A Violent Abduction
According to Mathobela, he was attacked while hiding in a shack, beaten with thick sticks and a whip, then taken to the mountain where he was circumcised against his will.
“They assaulted me, even broke my arm. As soon as we got to the mountain, they immediately circumcised me. I did not want to go,” he said. “I want whoever sent them to be arrested. They must pay for the harm they caused me.”
His abductors reportedly claimed they were sent to fetch him after learning he had never undergone the traditional rite of passage to manhood.
Family Left Struggling
Mathobela’s wife revealed that the ordeal has placed a heavy financial burden on the family, who rely on old age grants. She now serves as his caregiver, tending to his injuries and ensuring he does not suffer further complications from leaving the initiation school prematurely.
“He is old. He deserves respect,” she said. “What if he died? He is frail and on chronic medication.”
Community Outrage
The incident has sparked anger among community members, with five people reporting criminal cases to the police. Some were assaulted, and two others were allegedly abducted in similar circumstances.
A community representative emphasized that while they respect cultural practices, consent must be respected. “We are not against tradition, but we must respect everyone’s personal decisions and beliefs,” they said.
Authorities Respond
The village headman has denied involvement, while the Traditional Affairs Department and the Provincial Initiation Coordinating Committee have declined to comment, citing an ongoing police investigation.
Police confirm that the case is under investigation, but no arrests have been made yet.
The family is calling for accountability, hoping this shocking case will prevent similar violations in the future.
