LIMPOPO – A 42-year-old suspect has been arrested in the Ritavi policing area in connection with the rape of a six-year-old girl, following swift action by local authorities and community vigilance.
The incident allegedly occurred on 18 July 2026 at approximately 20:30. The six-year-old victim was attending a family gathering near her residence with another child when a known male neighbor requested that the children accompany him to his home to retrieve a jacket.
When the second child returned alone, concerned family members immediately went to the neighbor’s residence to check on the minor. They discovered the six-year-old girl partially undressed at the suspect’s home. Upon being questioned, the child disclosed the assault, prompting the family to report the matter to the police without delay.
A formal case of rape was opened, and the victim was transported to a local hospital for a comprehensive medical examination. Detectives from the Tzaneen Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit were promptly notified and assisted with the investigation, which directly led to the apprehension of the 42-year-old suspect on 19 July 2026.
Acting Provincial Commissioner of Police in Limpopo, Major General Jan Scheepers, strongly condemned the despicable crime. He commended the community for their vigilance and swift reporting, which facilitated the suspect’s rapid arrest. Major General Scheepers urged parents and guardians to remain constantly attentive and ensure they do not lose sight of young children under their care.
The suspect is scheduled to appear before the Ritavi Magistrate’s Court on Tuesday, 21 July 2026. Police investigations into the matter remain ongoing.
