In a concerted effort by the police in this Province through its detection workforce in the fight against serious and violent crimes head on, more criminals are continuing to get long jail terms.
Tswane Tshepiso Phahlamohlaka aged 32 from Ga-Phala village in the Jane Furse policing area was sentenced to an effective consolidated 40 years imprisonment by the Groblersdal Magistrates’ Court on charges of murder and attempted murder following a brutal attack on the Makanyani family at Madibong village.
On Sunday, 17 January 2016 at about 20:00, the accused attacked this family at their house where he shot and killed the deceased, Mr Dithame Piet Makanyani aged 78 and further shot and wounded another 39 year old family member.
The motive behind these attacks was the battle between the stock theft syndicate and the livestock owners.
The sentences were categorized as follows: 20 years imprisonment for murder, 5 years imprisonment for attempted murder, 5 years imprisonment for unlawful possession of ammunition, 5 years imprisonment for unlawful possession of firearm, 5 years imprisonment for malicious damage to property.
The Provincial Commissioner Lt Gen Nneke Ledwaba has welcomed these sentences with both hands with the believe that it will serve as a deterrent to all the criminals out there with a clear message that you can ran, but you can’t hide and that crime does not pay.
